鈥淚 am a bi-racial Jew: My mom is white and Jewish, and my dad is Black and a non-practicing Christian. My parents always told me how special I am to be part of two extraordinary groups of people, but I long believed I could only be one or the other. Over the years I have learned to become more comfortable coexisting in both identities.

鈥淢y family observes all the major Jewish holidays. I can still see my relatives crowding in my grandma鈥檚 kitchen to enjoy Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Passover. I can even smell her matzo ball soup simmering in her large red pot. Judaism is an aspect of my life that often brings my family together, but it has not always been easy.

鈥淏eing the only Black Jew in the room has often made me feel isolated, not represented, and it has made me question my place in the Jewish community. In first grade, I started attending Hebrew school; in seventh grade, I celebrated my Bar Mitzvah; and in high school, I began working with Jewish organizations.

鈥淚t was only then, when I started getting involved with those groups, that I have found more Jews who look like me. When I came across a fellowship for Jews of Color, I finally found a community where I could talk about shared experiences. I continued to find more young Jews of Color through the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, where I worked with other Reform Jews to get people registered to vote in the 2020 election, and through the Jewish Youth Climate Movement (JYCM), where I serve on the Executive Board as the Director of Equity and Inclusion.

鈥淲ithin these organizations, I have found a diverse group of Jews whom I can learn from and an amazing community of people who are motivated and passionate about the work they do. And by being a part of these communities, I have felt encouraged to embrace myself 鈥 no matter what Jewish space I occupy. After all these years, I feel so lucky now to say I am proud to be Jewish.鈥 鈥 Elijah Harris, Brown University听鈥26

Speaking Up for Israel /story/speaking-up-for-israel/ Tue, 25 Oct 2022 00:00:00 +0000 /story/speaking-up-for-israel/ For me, Judaism is warmth. It is the warmth of a mazel tov on a happy occasion. It is the warmth of far too much food at every social gathering. It is the warmth of traveling away from home to college and having a constant, reliable base in the campus Hillel. And it is the warmth of hearing 鈥渨elcome home鈥 the moment you step foot in Israel.

As the third of seven children, I grew up in a house that was never quiet. I was less than three years old when I was no longer the baby of the family, and I was barely seven when I became an older sister for the fourth time. Life was chaotic, disorganized, loud, so very Jewish, and I loved it more than I can possibly say. On Friday afternoons when I was little, the house would be warm: challah cooking in the oven, Shabbat songs playing on the old karaoke machine, and the rooms ringing with the cacophony of all four grandparents and a new baby nearly every year.听

For me, Judaism is warmth.

I love that warmth. I crave that warmth. I am so unbelievably privileged to have known that warmth my whole life.

But it is also that warmth that makes me unable to stay silent when Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions resolutions get introduced at Brown University, or when 鈥淔ree Palestine鈥 gets carved into dining hall walls, or when Students for Justice in Palestine initiates Apartheid Week on campus. I grew up in a house that was never quiet, and when it comes to Israel, I feel a responsibility to speak up. My first year of college, I joined Brown Students for Israel, and as a current junior, I serve as the club鈥檚 president. As a pro-Israel, Jewish student, my role is not only to fight explicit forms of anti-Zionism, but also to engage others in productive dialogue about places where we can find common ground.听

During the summer of 2021, when only first-years were on campus due to Brown鈥檚 COVID-19 policies, I organized a joint meeting with Brown Students for Israel and J Street to discuss the Knesset鈥檚 plans for a new government coalition. Our two clubs have serious philosophical differences, and yet, thirty students from both groups managed to come together just to talk to one another. This type of dialogue forms a central reason why I am so grateful to also serve as one of the vice chairs of 精东影业鈥檚 Israel Leadership Network (ILN). As part of ILN, I have the opportunity to speak with over 100 students from diverse backgrounds and colleges, all of whom are passionate about understanding, celebrating, and reconciling our different opinions about Israel.听

My primary goal as president of Brown Students for Israel and vice-chair of ILN, and in my role as the Campus Free Expression Intern for the Bipartisan Policy Center, is to be a part of the movement to break down conversation barriers around Israel. Misconceptions and misinformation thrive in silence. I am so lucky to have grown up in a house that was never silent, because Judaism is never silent. Israel is never silent. Everything about our community is warm, loud, and robust 鈥 and I feel very grateful to be part of a people who are committed to keeping it that way.

Brown/RISD Hillel Fosters Jewish Connection Through Pop-up Art Exhibition

Just before winter break, as many Brown/RISD Hillel students were packing their bags and saying goodbye to their friends, two sophomores were fretting about their artwork.

Campus art studios were closing for break, meaning Mira Goodman, 20, and Thalia Bonas, 19, would need to lug their seven large oil canvases off campus and through an airport.

For Bonas and Goodman, both of whom are studying visual arts at Brown University, painting these canvases was part of an effort to make up for lost time. After months of pandemic isolation, the artists channeled their pent-up creativity into artwork last fall.

Now, they had captivating paintings and nowhere to put them.

The students had a thought: Maybe Hillel could store their artwork. They reached out to Molly Goldmeier, the assistant director of Brown/RISD Hillel.

鈥淲e said 鈥榃ow, this is an awesome opportunity for an exhibit,鈥 Goldmeier said. 鈥淪o our Hillel became a gallery.鈥

She said many students would never expect Hillel to transform into an art gallery. Beyond Shabbat dinners and holiday gatherings, Hillel can enrich Jewish life by elevating student passions, Goldmeier said.

鈥淲e鈥檙e always looking to add value to the student experience,鈥 Goldmeier said. 鈥淓ven if it is just as simple as storing art. We鈥檙e a very creative Hillel with a lot of spirit on our team.鈥

Brown/RISD Hillel opened the exhibit in early February. Over the next six weeks, Goodman and Bonas received texts from friends who visited the Hillel exhibit.听

Bonas said working with Hillel to exhibit her art was an amazing experience.

鈥淚t was so kind of them to offer to store and showcase my work,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 really appreciate all the help and effort they provided to help make it happen.”

The artwork was diverse, ranging from depictions of Jewish celebrations to various romantic relationships. One of the paintings depicted a family seder. Multiple students said the grandfather depicted in the painting looked like their own grandfather.

鈥淗illel has consistently been a supportive environment for me as an artist,鈥 Goodman said. 鈥淪o for them to suggest creating a show out of my pieces showed how much they care about encouraging local artists like me to create and display work.鈥

The pop-up exhibit fostered connectivity between Jewish art lovers, and inspired more students to envision their work on the gallery walls. Motivated by the success, Brown/RISD Hillel organized two other art exhibits featuring depictions of Jewish spiritual objects created by more than 30 students.

Goldmeier is looking forward to more art-inspired events 精东影业, which she hopes will bring more Jewish students together.

She said, 鈥淎rtwork brings out emotion in people and touches everyone in a different way.鈥

鈥淚n fifth grade, I struggled with a newly diagnosed life-threatening peanut allergy, the resulting anxiety, and for good measure, an appendectomy. During that rough year, writing was the creative outlet I needed and became the catalyst for the adventure of a lifetime.

鈥淚 decided I wanted to write a story that I, as an avid reader, would love to read. I molded my favorite genres into one idea, creating the Stone of Discedo: a time-traveling stone that requires the user to fix three terrible events in history to access its power. I did hours of research to send my characters on their adventures, and hundreds more perfecting the story.

鈥淥nce I finished, I wanted to publish it. Some kids laughed, some believed I could do it. Their doubt became fuel to my fire: I promised myself I鈥檇 make it happen 鈥 whether it took ten years or 10,000 rejections. I spent three-and-a-half years rewriting and editing. Finally, at 14, I signed a book contract. I have since released two novels, One Chance and Two Secrets (with Three Quests on the way), and a book for kids with anxiety called Cloudy Days.

鈥淚鈥檝e spoken to over 5,000 kids from dozens of schools, from every background imaginable. My presentation resonates with each kid differently: Some come up after my talk and tell me they鈥檙e going to write a book. Others tell me I inspired them to work harder on their hobby, or that they鈥檙e going to start reading more. Teachers have told me that for some kids, my books are the only chapter books they鈥檒l read, or that after my presentation, their students can鈥檛 stop writing stories.

鈥淚f I could tell fifth grade Sarah that by pursuing her dreams, she鈥檇 get to speak to thousands of kids and inspire them too, she wouldn鈥檛 believe me. Each experience reminds me that I am the role model I鈥檝e always wanted to be 鈥 and that all the hard work was undeniably worth it.鈥 鈥 Sarah Frank, Brown University听鈥25
