鈥淚 knew that I wanted to be a part of Jewish life on campus 鈥 part of a caring community where people could be themselves and express their connections to Judaism in their own way. Since my freshman year, I also have been active onstage and behind the scenes of Clark University Players Society, which is one of Worcester鈥檚 oldest theater companies. I find a lot of spiritual meaning in my ability to perform. I always take a few moments before a show begins to express gratitude for my feet that allow me to stand on stage, my voice that brings emotion to my character, and my individual spirit that allows me to put on the best show I can. In Judaism and theater, I feel a constant need to improve; to know that each event or moment in time can be better than the one that came before it. The Jewish people and lovers of theater 鈥 and those who are both 鈥 have made it clear that they will confront any obstacle that comes their way with care, grace, and love for the people around them. I have come to believe that 鈥楢m Yisrael Chai,鈥 in many ways, means 鈥楾he Show Must Go On.鈥欌 鈥 Alex Sklarz, Clark University 鈥22

鈥淲hen I first came out as trans, I was really scared that I wouldn鈥檛 be accepted by my Jewish community. There鈥檚 a passage in the Torah that says a woman should not dress up like a man, and a man should not dress up like a woman. That always concerned me because I鈥檝e been dressing masculine for as long as I鈥檝e been able to pick out my own clothes. But Judaism is open to interpretation. That鈥檚 the best part about Judaism. I interpret that passage to mean if you鈥檙e a man, be out and open as a man. And that鈥檚 how I live my life. Everyone has been so accepting at Clark University Hillel. I don鈥檛 feel like I have to leave part of my identity at the door. I鈥檓 so thankful to have a wonderful community who supports me and accepts me for who I am. And I am proud of who I am.鈥 鈥 Eli Cohen-Gordon, Clark University
